How to choose a PRP kit: a buyer's guide for clinics

Buying a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) system is a practice-equipment decision, not just a product purchase. The right kit depends on what you treat, how many cases you run, and how you want to work at the point of care.

Every PRP system concentrates platelets from a patient's own blood, but they differ in how they do it and how much you can control. This guide walks through the choices that actually matter, in plain language, so you can compare any PRP kit on its merits rather than on a sales sheet.

Start with clinical intent, not the brand

Before comparing brands, get clear on three things: which procedures you plan to offer, roughly how many cases per month, and whether you want one platform that can also handle bone marrow or adipose preparations. Single-spin vs double-spin

A single-spin process separates blood in one centrifugation step and is fast to run. A double-spin process adds a second step to further concentrate the platelet fraction. Neither is better in the abstract; the right choice depends on the concentration you want and how much hands-on time you can give each case. If you expect to want higher concentrations, ask whether a system offers a double-spin option.

Leukocyte-rich vs leukocyte-poor

Some systems let you prepare a leukocyte-rich (neutrophil-rich) or leukocyte-poor (neutrophil-poor) preparation. This is a preparation characteristic you may want to select based on clinical intent. If you anticipate needing both, choose a system that lets you switch rather than one that fixes the output.

Closed vs open systems

A closed, single-device system keeps blood in one sealed pathway from draw to preparation, which reduces handling steps. Open systems move the sample between containers. Closed systems are generally simpler to run consistently, which matters when multiple staff will prepare cases.

Reading yield and purity numbers

Vendors publish platelet-yield and red-blood-cell figures, for example up to roughly 9 billion platelets in a 7 mL dose, or under 1% red blood cells. Treat these as manufacturer-reported device specifications, not clinical outcomes. They are useful for comparing systems on the same basis, but a spec describes what the device can prepare, not a treatment result. Ask every vendor to state the conditions behind their numbers, such as dose volume, kit, and spin protocol.

Kit size and volume by intent

PRP kits commonly come in 30, 60, and 120 cc options. Larger kits prepare more volume per draw; smaller kits suit lower-volume sites. Match kit size to your typical case, and confirm the disposable is single-use for one preparation so you can forecast per-case supply cost.

The real number is the cost to run PRP, not the kit price

A kit's sticker price is only part of the picture. What matters to a practice is the cost to run a case against what the case earns. Questions to ask any PRP supplier

  • Is the system a 510(k)-cleared blood-processing device, and can you show the documentation?
  • Single-spin, double-spin, or both? Can I select leukocyte-rich vs leukocyte-poor?
  • Is it a closed, single-device system?
  • What kit sizes are available, and what is included in each kit?
  • Do you provide hands-on training, and who runs it?
  • Is there a loaner or trade-in path for the centrifuge?
  • How fast do you turn around pricing and reorders, and are you US-based?

What these devices are cleared for

Emcyte's instructions for use define the labeled indication for the PurePRP Supraphysiologic Concentrating System as follows, quoted verbatim:

"The PurePRP® Supraphysiologic Concentrating System is designed to be used for the safe and rapid preparation of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) from a small sample of blood at the patient's point of care. The PRP is mixed with autograft and allograft bone prior to application to an orthopedic site to improve bone graft handling characteristics."

The same document states: "The PRP prepared by this device has not been evaluated for any clinical indications." It also states that the safety and effectiveness of the device for in vivo indications such as bone healing and hemostasis have not been established, and that the PRP prepared by the device is not indicated for delivery to the patient's circulatory system.

Any application other than the labeled indication falls outside it. That is not unusual in this field, and it is not something PRP Direct can authorize, recommend, or direct. It rests on the independent clinical judgment of a licensed physician, exercised under their own license and their own informed-consent process.
